ORIGINS

A Henley shirt is a collarless pullover shirt, characterized by a round neckline and a placket about 3 to 5 inches (8 to 13 cm) long and usually has 2–5 buttons.

The name originates from Henley-on-Thames where rowers wore the jerseys as part of their uniform. The first Henley Royal Regatta was in 1839.  Rowers favoured the Henley as it was easier to take on and off due to the 3 buttons on the collar but also because of increased ventilation from the placket and lack of collar.

The Henley shirt is now a common piece in menswear seen often by guys that are going for the “casual cool” look.
